Constant speculation is spinning out of control in the GLBT community, wondering if the Senate will be bringing Anti-Hate Crime bills before the ballot this week.

According to “The Advocate Judy Shepard will be on Capitol Hill Tuesday with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid during his weekly address to journalists.

“It demonstrates his commitment and determination to moving forward on hate crimes legislation,” Jim Manley, the Majority Leader’s director of communications, said of Reid’s invitation to Shepard.

The GLBT community feels Judy Shepard is a very good sign and that Democrats think they could have the 60 votes necessary to attach the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act to the Department of Defense reauthorization bill.  ( Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont announced Monday he intends to bring the amendment forward.)

This comes on the heels of recent “gay” bashing incidents.  Memorial Day weekend in Provincetown, Massachusetts… a known gay friendly town and safe haven for the entire GLBT community became a street doused with hate crime.  Two women walking down the street were beaten and mistakenly called “faggots” by a man thinking they were gay men.  See the story here!
